Log Rot & Decay

Log rot is usually caused by either a moisture problem, ultraviolet rays from the sun, dry rot, or bug infestation. All of the above will do damage to the logs and should be corrected as soon as possible. Every homeowner should do a visual inspection of their cabin twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. It is important to check the gutters, making sure that water is not running over and splashing down on the logs. If a log home is not properly maintained and left unprotected, water can enter the wood and create some serious and expensive log rot. Log rot could double in six months if not taken care of properly. If a borate treatment is not used, beetles can get into the logs and eat the inside part of the log. Proper applications in borate treatment, staining, chinking, and caulking can help to prevent beetles and other insects and water from damaging your logs. Keep in mind, that the strongest wood left unprotected will succumb to the weathering elements sooner that the weakest protected wood. The ultraviolet rays will break down the lignin in the wood, which holds the wood fibers together. Once the lignin breaks down, water can wash away the loose wood fibers, thus having dry rot set in.

When the log rot is not severe and only on the surface, not risking the structural integrity, then epoxy fillers can be used to repair the damage. If a log home has deep and severe log rot, a partial or full log replacement might be necessary. Our master craftsman has over 20 years field experience replacing and repairing various log types on cabins. Most of the logs are customized and milled by our master craftsman himself. All logs are custom fit and after they are set in place, our restoration team will finish the job, apply chinking or caulking, treat the new log with borate treatment to prevent insect invasion, and finally finish with a matching stain.

When replacing rotten logs in a cabin, our master craftsman fully understands the structural work acquired in order to insure the new logs are properly aligned and fitted. We have many years of experience in replacing full logs as well as ½ log replacement and log siding. There are many factors to consider when replacing a full log, for example, the right size and shape, as well as the best match to your log home. TLCR is also experienced in replacing log corners and log ends, windows, sills, doors, trim, porches, decks and deck boards, soffits, porch ceilings, and some roofing.

In an old cabin we restored, our craftsman turned a 10” x 10” beam into a 200-year old looking beam with all its markings to match the cabin perfectly. Total Log Cabin removed and replaced wood shingles in the 200-year old cabin. Our craftsman removed a section of logs by the fireplace and matched it to give it the same aged look! The door was removed and was rebuilt with a new door to give it the 18th century look. We also added a wooden floor over the dirt floor.
