The Total Log Cabin Restoration crew is in Buncombe County this week restoring a log home located in Asheville, NC.
This job required a full restoration of stripping off old stain, as well as, replacing caulking where needed.
The crew started with the usual preparation of removing the gutter downspouts for easy access to the corners of the log home. As always, the exterior lighting is covered and taped up to prevent any electrical shortage.
Armando, the crew leader doesn’t waist any time and begins the stripping process. I will take a full day to strip all four sides of this log home. This will include applying a neutralizer to prevent the stripping agent from being active, and a Borax treatment is applied to control wood eating insects.
On day two, after an overnight drying, the logs are then sanded down to smooth out the surface and provide a uniform base for the new stain application. The log, windows, and doors are inspected for loose and missing caulking, and replaced with new.
On this job, Mike, our master carpenter, has been called in to replace about 17 feet of log rot. With the carpentry work completed, the crew is now ready to re-coat the cabin. The cabin and garage door trim will be stained with, TWP, Russet Brown. The garage door, and front porch will be stained with TWP Slate Grey. The door and window trim will be painted with a darker shad of grey, SW 9163, Tin Lizzie.
