Log Cabin Repair and Restore in Oak Island, NC Brunswick County

Today, The Total Log Cabin Restoration crew is in the beautiful oceanside town called Oak Island, North Carolina. Our crew is headed by Armando and he can’t wait to get this cute ranch style log home restored.

Todays project will involve some repair work from our master carpenter. Mike, is set to cut out and replace about nineteen feet of log rot on the corners of the home, install four six by six post with Y bracing in the front elevation, and replace two sets of steps on the front porch.

First thing’s first. The restoration team will start the preparation process by clearing the decks and exterior walls of any decorations. The gutter downspouts are removed to protect them from stain as well as an easy access to the corner. of the home, All the exterior lighting will also be covered and taped to protect and prevent electrical shortage.

On the first day, the crew will apply a stripping agent to the logs, allow about 15 minutes to activate before rinsing with a strong power washing.
Once the home has been stripped and cleaned, a neutralizing agent is applied to assure the stripping agent has been de-activated.

On the following day, after a night of drying time, the team will sand down the logs. The power washer at times, can be harsh on the wood as it opens all the wood pours. Sanding the logs will help restore the smoothness and a clean the surface creating a uniform log.

Before any new stain can be applied, the logs and deck will be treated with a Borate treatment. The will help keep those pesky wood eating insects from attacking the wood.
This cabin will also require some caulking maintenance. The crew will inspect all the caulking around the home and re-enforce with new caulk as needed.

The cabin is now ready for stain application. Jack and Jeannette, our cabin owners, have chosen TWP slate grey for their cabin color and a light grey for all the trim and deck. As with all our restoration projects, the log home will receive two coats of stain. The first coat will be applied today and the second coat will be applied the next day.
