Today the boys of Total Log Cabin Restoration are back in Pittsboro, NC Chatham County. The Team-leader for this crew is, William, and he doesn’t waist any time getting the crew started on prepping the ranch style log cabin.
On day one, the prep begins by clearing off the decks and moving any deck furniture away from the cabin. The gutter downspouts are removed for easy access to the corners of the cabin as well as protecting them from the new stain application. The exterior lighting will also be covered and taped to protect and prevent electrical shortage.
The master carpenter has been brought in to replace about 70 feet of log rot.
After the prep work is complete, the crew begins coating the logs with a stripping agent. The stripper is allowed to work its magic. Twenty minutes later, the stripping agent is washed off with the pressure washer. A member will then apply neutralizer to de-activate the stripper agent.
On day two, after a nights drying time from cleaning and stripping, the crew will sand down the logs to smooth the surface. This will give the logs a uniform look, as well as, prepare the surface for the new stain. When the sanding is complete, a Borate treatment is applied to prevent wood eating insects damaging the logs and, or trim.
On day three, the crew will inspect the cabin’s caulking and replace as needed. The doors, windows are also inspected, and re-caulked in areas that are needed.
On day four, the cabin is ready for stain application, and the crew will apply TWP Gold. This cabin will receive two coats, the first coat will be applied today and the second coat will be applied on the following day. The trim color has been matched and a fresh coat of paint has been applied to the trim.
