Today, the Total Log Cabin Restoration crew are in home base territory in Wake Forest, NC Wake County. The crew has a big job ahead of them on this one. Our customer, Emily W would like her log home cleaned and restored in both the exterior and interior.
Armando will lead this team and he will start with the exterior restoration first. The crew gets started on the preparation process. As with all the restoration jobs, the decks are cleared, and all furniture is removed, The gutter downspouts are also removed to protect them from stain as well as an easy access to the corner. of the home, All the exterior lighting will also be covered and taped to protect and prevent electrical shortage.
Armando will start stripping on the West side of the house, giving Mike, our master carpenter the opportunity to tackle the repairs on the front porch. Mike and crew removed and replaced porch beams under deck boards and two columns holding up the porch. Mike also discovered an additional 36' and 5 log corners of log rot. With customer's permission, all carpentry needs were addressed.
In the meantime, the crew is busy stripping down the old stain. The stripper will remain on the logs to dissolve and break down the old product. About twenty minutes later, the stripping agent is washed off with the pressure washer. After the stripper has been rinsed off, a neutralizer will be applied to de-activate the stripper agent.
On the following day, after a night of drying time, the crew will sand down the logs to smooth the surface. This will give the logs a uniform look, as well as, prepare the surface for the new stain. When the sanding is complete, a Borate treatment is applied to prevent wood eating insects damaging the logs and, or trim.
On the third day, the crew will inspect the caulking and replace as needed. The doors, windows are also inspected, and re-caulked in areas that are needed.
With all the prep work completed, the log home is ready for the first coat of stain. Our customer has chosen TWP Butternut. The second coat will be applied on the following day.
Interior Restoration: The crew cleaned all interior logs and then sanded to achieve a smooth finish. Armando inspected and re-caulked around all window and door trims as needed. Two coats of oil varnish were applied to interior logs, sanding in between coats for a smoother finish. The ceiling logs were cleaned but did not receive varnish.
This is what Emily had to say about the restoration of her home:
“ This restoration was everything I wished for and more. All involved were timely, professional, competent and trustworthy. I love the new look of my cabin. It is 50 years old. I want it to last at least another 50. Now it will. Thank you for all the hard work and the excellent results.”
