The Total Log Cabin Restoration crew has arrived in Caldwell County, Blowing Rock, NC, ready to rejuvenate David P’s log home. This time, they’ll be cleaning and re-coating the cabin, along with giving the roof a thorough clean. Fortunately, the log home is in good condition and doesn't need a full restoration.
Perez, the crew leader, kicks off the preparation process with his team. As with all their projects, they begin by clearing the decks and removing all furniture. The gutter downspouts are taken down to protect them from the stain and to allow easy access to the home’s corners. Additionally, all exterior lighting is covered and taped to prevent any electrical issues.
This project is a partial restoration, also known as maintenance cleaning and re-coating. Since it’s not a full restoration, there’s no need to strip off old products. Instead, the crew focuses on a thorough cleaning. They use a three-part cleaning agent designed to combat mold and mildew while removing dirt and grime from the logs. The solution is applied with a sprayer and then rinsed off using a low-pressure wash at 800 psi, ensuring the logs remain undamaged.
Once the cleaning is complete and the log home has had time to dry, the crew inspects all the caulking, including around the window and door frames. Fresh caulking is applied wherever necessary.
With the log home now prepped and ready, the crew applies one coat of Sikkens Butternut stain. To provide extra protection, they also mix in Bee Gone, a treatment that guards against beetles and other wood-eating insects.
