The team from Total Log Cabin Restoration has arrived in Charlotte, NC, located in Mecklenburg County, to undertake the meticulous process of repairing, media blasting, and re-coating David B's log home.
The repairs will be completed by the company’s master carpenter, Mike. Mike will remove and replace fourteen feet of log rot, forty-four feet of one by ten fascia facing, and two log ends.
William, serving as the crew leader, wastes no time in initiating the preparation phase. As is customary for their restoration projects, the crew diligently clears the decks and removes all furniture. Additionally, they take down the gutter downspouts to shield them from staining and facilitate easy access to the home's corners. All exterior lighting fixtures are carefully covered and taped to safeguard them against damage and potential electrical issues.
On the initial day of work, the crew applies a stripping agent generously onto the logs, allowing it to work its magic for twenty minutes. Subsequently, the stripping agent is thoroughly washed off using a pressure washer, followed by the application of a neutralizer to deactivate any remaining residue.
The following day, after allowing sufficient time for drying, the team meticulously sands down the logs to achieve a smooth surface, ensuring a uniform appearance and preparing the surface for the forthcoming stain application. To safeguard against wood-eating insects, a Borate treatment is meticulously applied to the logs and trim.
On the third day, with the log home adequately dried, the crew conducts a comprehensive inspection of all caulking, including window and door frames, applying fresh caulking wherever necessary.
Finally, the cabin is primed for the application of the new stain. TWP Butternut is the stain of choice for this cabin. The first coat is applied on day three, with the second coat following suit on day four.
Here is what David had to say: ”Everyone was very professional. The crew arrived each morning when they promised and came ready to work.
